in Cheshire

The Bramhall Group of the Family History Society of Cheshire was formed in May 1999 with an initial 27 members.  Our first meeting place was the Methodist Church Hall in the centre of Bramhall, but attendance at our subsequent monthly meeting grew rapidly, and in 2002 we moved to a larger hall at the United Reformed Church on the corner of Robin’s Lane and Bramhall Lane South.

Today we have over 100 members, whose interests extend well beyond the Bramhall and Stockport Metropolitan area.  In addition to pursuing their own family history interests, members are encouraged to help on particular local projects.  Our main project at the moment concerns the transcription of birth, marriage and death indexes held at Stockport Register Office for incorporation into the Cheshire BMD database.  All the records from 1837 to 1950 have now been transcribed, comprising the Stockport, Cheadle, Bredbury, Marple and Hazel Grove registration districts of Cheshire, and the Heaton Norris district of Lancashire (to 1937).

We have also transcribed many of the memorial inscriptions in Park Road Cemetery in Cheadle, together with part of the burial register.

We meet on the second Thursday of each month (except July) at 7.30 p.m., and visitors are always welcome.  The entry charge of £2, for members and visitors alike, includes tea or coffee and biscuits, and opportunities to discuss family history problems with other members.  If you are just beginning your family history, come along, we are sure we can help!  Members can borrow CDs, microfiches and books from our extensive library of local records.

Instead of a normal meeting in July we arrange a visit to a place of interest to local and family historians. These have included Adlington Hall, John Rylands Library, Manchester Town Hall and Gorton Monastery.

The December meeting is usually a light-hearted social occasion with mince pies etc, provided by members in the spirit of the festive season.

Ian Cameron, our Bramhall Group Web-site Administrator, sends out reminders to our members for our meetings every month and usually includes family history news & tips

If you are not yet a member, do come along to one of our meetings - you are sure of a warm welcome!   The various membership options available to you can be found elsewhere on this site, and the Bramhall Group's programme of events is elsewhere in this section of the site.
