About the Society

ABOUT THE SOCIETY

The Family History Society of Cheshire (FHSC) was founded in 1969 to advance the study of family history and genealogy, and we now have around 3000 members worldwide. As well as helping people with ancestors in Cheshire, we also assist members living locally whose ancestors originated elsewhere.

The Society is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies and also the North West Group of Family History Societies.

It is a registered charity (No. 515168). All our officers and officials are unpaid volunteers, helping in their spare time.

What do we offer our members?

  • There are now fifteen Groups based throughout the county, and one in Middlesex. Each group arranges its own programme of meetings and activities, and members of the Society are welcome to attend the meetings of any group. We also hold open days for all members at various venues throughout Cheshire

  • Our thriving Computer Club offers help to members with all levels of experience in family history and computing.

  • Our  Research Centre is based at Mobberley, near Knutsford where we have a range of research materials, including our well stocked library, michrofiche and microfilm readers, computer facilities with internet access and a large family tree plotter. The library contains over a thousand books and exchange journals from other Societies. All the research resources are for reference only. Most of the Groups have smaller libraries of their own, which often contain books relating to their own areas.

  • A selection of books for sale is often available at Family History Fairs and some items from our Microfiche Library may be loaned to members by post.

  • We produce a large number of Publications relating to Cheshire family history, including marriage census indexes, monumental inscriptions and parish register transcripts.

  • Our quarterly Journal, the Cheshire Ancestor, includes articles of general geneaolgical interest, as well as articles relevent to Cheshire genealogy. Society notices, new members\' interests, news of forthcoming events, group reports and programmes complete the contents.

  • Members are also invited to participate in our Society\'s numerous Projects, which include indexing of parish registers, transcribing gravestone inscriptions and inputting data for publication.
