As prophesied by Dorothy Bintley at our last meeting familysearch.org has completely changed. To take advantage of it's new features you will have to register. These are adding your own photographs and family trees, but just to search you won't need to, just click on search and everything will operate the same as before.
Brian Hallworth came along to talk about 'From the Old Wife's Mouth'. Brian is a professional speaker with a portfolio of talks. His talks started with his interest in the natural world and began to progress with links to the origins of folklore. He is a popular speaker to our group and in December 2011 came to talk about 'In the Bleak Midwinter' and the origin of Christmas customs. This time he gave us a talk about some of the cures used by knowledgeable women and folklore cures for various ailments - seemingly the more gruesome the most effective.
I am already booking Brian to come along at Easter 2014.
John Parsons came along to tell us about his work as a Town Crier. Arriving in costume, two tables of memorabilia set out to illustrate his work awards, various photographs and his collection of bells. Our one speaker who everyone could hear.
The evening concluded with the Astley Arms legendary potato pie - delivered piping hot from next door and a raffle to try to defray the cost. An excellent evening which everyone enjoyed.
Yesterday I attempted to add members to our new members only email list. Unfortunately I had technical issues that mean the method of implementation will need to change.
Apolgies to those few members who received one or more emails (subscribe/unsubscribe) during the failure. You wil not receive any more emails until the issue is resolved.
The arrival of emails was foretold in the December Cheshire Ancestor.
Really good meeting last night of our Tameside Family History Group with record attendance. Adrian Brown gave a talk about his ancestor Seth Backhouse, a Baptist Minister much involved in the Temperance movement, before he became addicted to drink and gambling, spent time in the Workhouse and in Gaol, finally becoming a roving evangelical Salvationist. He was introduced as Seth before travelling forward in time to begin his story. He'd actually managed to procure a copy of Seth's full rigout and wide awake hat. Excellent and Well done!!

Joan came along to our Tameside Group in October to tell us how her research into local and national events had added context to her family history stories. A very well received talk, which should have everyone rushing to read descriptions of places in Trade Directories, studying the various Acts of Parliament, local newspapers for reports of agitation concerned with Luddites, Chartists, Poor Law Reform or the Anti Corn Laws etc., even how the weather, poor harvests and wars affected our ancestors' lives. Well illustrated with many Macclesfield examples.
Thanks go to Macclesfield Group and the Research Centre Team for making the arrangements, providing the facilities and tea and cakes. The Members day was successful and well attended. The talk from Paul Newman of the Cheshire Record office brought us up to date on the archives and looked to the future. At the AGM outgoing officers - Alan Bennett, Doreen Holtermann and Lesley Smetham were thanked and presented with glass paperweights inscribed with the FHSC logo and noting our thanks. Our new chairman is Paul Simpson (Group Leader of Nantwich) and the new treasurer is Victoria Doran (West Kirby). There were no offers to stand as secretary, currently the role will be shared between Doreen Holtermann and David Smetham. If there are any offers to take on the Secretary role or part of it (Minutes secretary or Society Secretary contact) please contact David Smetham at

Following the AGM, members were able to use the research facilities, browse and buy books and CDs from David Johnson on our bookstall or participate in the visit to the Unitarian Church in Knutsford to learn about the history of the church and its members including Mrs Gaskell. Mrs Gaskell is buried in the churchyard and there is a small museum dedicated to her in the refurbished church visitor centre.
A new section has been created on our website for members to submit their stories. These are long articles - much too long for the Ancestor, but probably a little too short for private publishing.
You will need to be logged in, then go to the Members Only menu in the bottom right-hand corner and click on the link for On-line Research Resources.

4550 Mile Genealogy Lecture without leaving Macclesfield
I have just participated in a brilliant long distance lecture on the benefits of the latest version of the FAMILYSEARCH search engine, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Victoria Road Macclesfield. (The LDSChurch offered their facilities because our normal venue lacks an adequate Broadband connection.)
I was only just on time but the Car Park was totally full and I had to park on the roadside so on entering the hall it was no surprise to find the audience was slightly swelled from our usual numbers, a later head count established that 71 bodies had ventured out on a cold wet Autumn evening.

Have you seen the web-browser toolbar provided by MLFHS?
Did you ever think why dont we have one? Well now we do!!!!!!!
It will work if you use Internet Explorer or Firefox on Windows. If you have an Apple Mac then it only works with Safari.
You can download it here or from the new main menu item or from the banner at the bottom of the page. The banner is nice as it shows you how the toolbar looks.
Please download and use it as each use generates income for the society, not a lot but we like it.

I am sorry to say that once again the Cheshire Surnames Directory has suffered at the hands of hackers. My web-space provider has shut it down. I need to work out a strategy for making it secure from further attack.
All of the current data is safe in a database. The hackers were using the site to send spam email around the world.
Once I have worked out a method of securing it from this form of attack I will be back on air.
Please send an email to me via the Contact Us menu if you would be interested in such a service.
Please let me know if you are an existing member or would consider becoming a member if this service was offered.
Sorry for the issues when we went live. I tried a facility that should have made it easier for search engines to find the new site ................ but it obviously didn't work.
That problem is now fixed and I have also responded to early feedback and added Quick LInks.
As a result I have reset the Poll to capture new feedback.
